Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has conducted a series of workshops for the fish processing industry to create awareness about traceability
There is an on going project funded by EU-UNIDO USA national regulatory body for fishery products regulation and consumer safety., USA Fisheries Import Regulations,Human Resource Development through compliance of HACCP on "Strengthening of Fish Inspection and Quality Control Service in Bangladesh".  The following are the important aspects which are going to be implemented by the project:

  1. Existing Laboratory to be modernized to ensure appropriate testing facility of Fish and Fishery Products;
  2. Quality assurance by up-dating existing monitoring systems;
  3. Development of value-added products;
  4. Human Resource Development through compliance of HACCP, training, women development, study tour, consultative meeting, visit, monitoring and evaluation;
  5. Management Development;  and
  6. Research and investigation.

Bangladesh requested the European Communities to provide more technical and financial assistance, mainly in the fisheries and livestock sectors.  The European Communities is going to arrange a training program for technical personnel in France and Indonesia.

The inception phase of the programme started on January 2006 and will be implemented from July 2006. The programme will be handed over between July 2006 to December 2009.

The Industries Minister informed that the government has already taken various steps and implement strategically important modernization programmes to strengthen the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI).

United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is providing support to bring the fish inspection and traceability capability of Department of Fisheries and the private sector up to a level to meet EU and USA standards.


CODEX

BSTI is the Codex Focal Point for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution is established as an Institution for standardization, testing, metrology, quality control, grading and marking of goods. Within the framework of this ordinance, Government has established the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).One import task is to certify the quality of commodities, materials, whether for local consumption, export and import. The Ordinance has been amended as The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (Amendment) Act, 2003. Currently, BSTI is developing a ‘Policy on Labelling'.
