Export Inspection Council (EIC) 
MPEDA 
CIFT 
- Competent authority for certifying fishery
products for exports.
- Technical and Administrative Control is executed
through the operation unit Export Inspection Agency (EIA) of the
Ministry of Commerce & Industry
- Under the Export (Quality Control and
Inspection) Act 1963, EIC/EIA is fully empowered to implement
quality control and monitoring system of fish processing
establishments for export
- Joint assessment of processing plants done by
Inter-Departmental Panel (IDP) consisting of EIA, Marine Products
Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and Central Institute of
Fisheries Technology (CIFT)
- 140 fish processing plants approved for export
to the EU
- MPEDA plays an important role on drug residue
monitoring progamme a per EU requirement
- CIFT provides training and research with respect
to quality assurance and food safety controls to the industry

1954, MOHF is authorized to lay down standards for food processed
and marketed domestically
- MOCI under the Export (Quality Control and
Inspection) Act 1963 is in charge of preparing conditions, rules
and standards of fishery products intended for export
- Standards for exported products mainly based on
importing country particularly EU requirements
- Due to recent problems of antibiotic residues in
aquaculture shrimp, relevant agencies have issued notifications
during 2001 to 2003 for controlling drug abuse in aquaculture
shrimp
- At the farm level, MOA is responsible for laying
down conditions in licensing aquaculture farms including
regulating use of banned antibiotics and pharmacologically active
substances during shrimp culture operation
