The establishment of a pan-Arab free trade area is the main objective of the Cairo Convention of 1997.

The organisation, established in 1981, is aimed at providing the means to achieve co-ordination, integration and co-operation in economic, social and cultural affairs between its member countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates).
