The US FDA is the national regulatory body for fishery products regulation and consumer safety.

Following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the Bioterrorism act was enforced in a move to enhance the security of the United States. The law was signed in June 12, 2002. According to this act, the FDA must receive prior notice before food is imported into the United States.

Under this rule, all products such as beef, lamb, pork, fish, perishable agricultural commodities and peanuts requires country of origin labeling. The program implementation is the responsibility of US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service. Full details of the ruling can be obtained from the USDA website.

The United States Trade Representative Office ( USTR ) negotiates directly with foreign governments to establish trade agreements as well as settle trade disputes. Some of its work includes the development and evaluation of science and technology strategies and policies, conservation and management of NOAA fisheries among others

The office also monitors global trends in fisheries, publishes the fisheries statistics of the US. The statistics are available on-line with a searchable database.

The division also provides reports and prices of trade in fishery products. Access current prices and trends
